About FAA Challenges
The Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) mission is to provide the safest, most efficient aerospace system in the world. The Administration strives to reach the next level of safety and efficiency and to demonstrate global leadership in how it safely integrates new users and technologies into its aviation system.
Beginning in Fall 2025, the FAA intends to sponsor a series of student competitions administered by the National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) that aim to engage the collegiate academic community in solving complex technical challenges that align with the FAA’s strategic priorities in emerging technologies, safety, and resiliency in aviation and aerospace. These challenges are designed to encourage students to tackle aerospace-related issues or concerns that have the potential to lead to breakthroughs in emerging technologies to ensure a safe and efficient National Airspace System (NAS), and will emphasize emerging technologies in the following six focus areas:
- Cybersecurity
- Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML)
- BIG Data Analytics
- Digital Twin
- Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)
- Autonomy
About NIA
The National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) is a nonprofit research, graduate education, and outreach institute located in Hampton, VA. Established in 2002 by NASA’s Langley Research Center and eight leading aerospace research universities, NIA brings together top minds from government, academia, and industry to drive innovation in aerospace, atmospheric science, and technology development. Through strategic collaborations with NASA and other federal agencies, universities, and private partners, we push the boundaries of discovery while preparing the next generation of scientists and engineers.
